The Comtrol line of explosion proof communication stations is intended for use in areas where a potential for explosion exists because of flammable gases, vapors, or finely pulverized dusts in the atmosphere. Hazardous locations may result from the normal processing of certain volatile chemicals, gases, or grains. It is also possible that a hazardous location may be created when volatile solvents or fluids, used in normal maintenance routines, vaporize to form an explosive atmosphere. Regardless of the cause, it is necessary to take every precaution to guard against ignition of the atmosphere. A source of ignition is simply the energy required to touch off an explosion in a hazardous location atmosphere. Electrical equipment can be a source of this ignition energy. Comtrol’s explosion proof devices are housed in enclosures which have been designed to be strong enough to contain an explosion internally if the hazardous vapors enter the enclosure and are ignited. These enclosures then cool and vent the products of combustion in such a way that the surrounding atmosphere is not ignited. They have been engineered to seal out dust. Contact between hazardous dust particles and the potential source of ignition has been eliminated and no explosion can occur. The speakers used must also be explosion proof and meet the appropriate ratings. Explosion proof audio stations are designed for use in flammable gas or dust locations. All Comtrol explosion proof units are Factory Mutual approved.
